Diplomacia - O denominador comum

"Dear Frogdropping: I have no words to describe the immense gratitude I feel for your having taken the time and effort to describe those harrowing days during which my grandfather Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches undertook the herculean efforts to see all these refugees to safety from the horrors of Hitler's concentration camps and certain death.
You are right in stating that the number of the people he saved is incalculable and indeed many more than the 38,000 visas that he personally signed, since as you correctly convey, in many instances were for families of up to 10+ individuals.
I personally witnessed and suffered myself through the desperation that my father, whose name I share, and the rest of the family, had to endure and continue to endure to this day due to the intransigence, obstinacy and denial of many of Portugal's ruling elites still indulge in our 'enlightened' 21st century.
Never mind that ASM was a direct descendant of Affonso Henriques, first King of Portugal, and himself Affonso, a direct descendant of Hugh Capet and Adelaide de Poitou, first King and Queen of Modern France. There is much more work to be done, and luckily, through the kind efforts of people like you, is in the process of being effected.
I do not have the words for the time being to express our eternal gratitude. I do however remain, as well as the rest of our family does, available to fill in the gaps of history, which has sadly taken so long to be told. For one thing, however, anybody can follow us on Facebook at our beloved ancestor's sites. Therein you will find information about many other websites and the such, including our very own "Foundation Aristides de Sousa Mendes" We do try to keep everybody updated and we are the first to acknowledge it is indeed a daunting task that we nevertheless will never shirk.

Honestly we need all the help we can muster and I, for one, am not afraid to request it. May God bless you Frogdropping, and all others who have posted their kind comments and offered support for the perpetuation of the memory of the name and actions of one "Righteous among the Righteous". Our humble thanks go to all of you. May God bless you!"

To my Andria - I love you and I´m proud of You

  1. Simões - I'm as speechless to find this as was Carlos Francisco Fernando de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches, when he found my account of his Grandfather's momentous efforts on behalf of humanity - as well as his sacrifice.

You're a wonderful man Simões - and you inspired me to write in the first place.

    Always, Andria
